Disclaimer: In no way, shape or form did Source pay me for this review. I am simply writing about a product that I truly believe is great and would benefit anyone who is looking to go hiking in areas where they only have access to streams.
If there is one thing that needs to be taken into significant consideration when you are out on the trail, particularly when you are away for multiple days, is access to drinkable water.
If you don’t have access to water from a tap, then your next best option is running water from a stream.
However, before you can drink it, you will almost certainly need to treat it.
There are many options available to you such as UV Steripens, tablets, and various others.
I’m a big fan of filters and once I found the Source Widepac Filter System, I’ve never looked back.
To begin with, I have always used Source products. My first and only one before the one I currently use was a Source WXP 3L Hydration Bladder.
It is absolutely fantastic and I still use it here and there. To filter the water I collected from streams, I used as Sawyer Mini-Filter.
Again, once I started using it I never looked back. It’s a compact little device that I have used in Victoria and New Zealand without getting sick.
However, my biggest issue was it was taking too long to filter water and then put it into my hydration bladder.
Enter the Source Widepac Filter System.
It comes with a detachable hose that includes a Source filter allowing you to refill your hydration bladder from any creek, river, lake, etc., and drink clean water.
How Does The Source Filter Work
As the water pass through the micro-fibrous tubes, any and all harmful bacteria and protozoa are trapped in the filter so you can be confident your water is safe to drink.
One of the great things about the Source Filter is that it can filter up to 100,000 gallons (378,541 litres) from any source of water.
Furthermore, they are such a robust piece of equipment that they can be reused over and over again without any replacement cartridges.
While the filter doesn’t remove all bacteria, it does remove 99% of bacteria such as salmonella, cholera, and E.coli, as well as 99% of protozoa such as cryptosporidium and giardia.
Similar to all Source products, the Source Widepac Filter System features a rounded shape Helix valve for easy drinking at any angle.
The unique retreat spring mechanism with a single-piece bite valve allows you to bite softly on it without any leaking.
It also comes with a protective cover that keeps the drinking valve clean and dirt-free.
All in all, I absolutely love this Source Widepac Filter System.
It’s a little heavier than some of the other hydration and filter systems on the market, but for me, the convenience of the system is a big feature.
This is the type of gear you’ll absolutely want to have for your next overnight adventure.
