In a first for The Hiking Society MeetUp, we hosted our first parents and kids hike by walking the Ringwood Lake Circuit Walk.
The walk, a 1.2km circuit around the lake itself, was, as intended, a much easier and more laid back walk than we have previously.
Starting from the north-east car park located off Mount Dandenong road, this walk begins and ends on a well-defined asphalt track.
Within minutes of beginning, you will head west and pass the historic miners cottage.
After this, the track heads towards the playground and a bridge/viewing platform in the middle of the lake.
It’s a nice spot to stop and take in the scenery, but Maroondah Council specifically states not to feed the ducks.
It’s a shame because, as kids, I reckon that was the best part about going to your local lake or pond.
Walking further west, the track takes you around to the other side of the lake where there are various spots to take a break.
More specifically, there was a small undercover area with two picnic tables that would be ideal if you were walking with the kids.
Aside from the playground on the northern side of the lake, I thought that the kids in our group got more enjoyment out of the southern side.
There were several spots where they could sit/stand by the little stream flowing into the lake and throw stones into.
Furthermore, they were able to stand on some of the rocks and figure out the depth of the water using the walking sticks they’d picked up along the way.
This type of hike was something completely new for our MeetUp and a great way for parents to get their children out of the house for a few hours.
Whilst I can’t speak for the other parents who attended with their kids, I know my two daughters absolutely loved it.
There is something really satisfying about introducing your kids to the wonderful world of hiking and the outdoors in general.
So, if you are wanting to take your kids for a short walk, or are looking for an entry-level walk to get them into hiking, be sure to check out the Ringwood Lake Circuit Walk.
It’s not overly taxing; it’s got some nice attractions, and, more importantly, for the kids, there’s a playground nearby.
